Mother Nature is not always our friend when we head out on a vacation, and if you are heading to Chicago she has a tendency to be a little temperamental. Of course we want the sun to be shining and the perfect temperatures. Sadly, with all our planning sometimes when we exit the airport we are greeted with grey skies and rain. This shouldn’t put a damper on our plans though. Don a pair of rain boots and a poncho, and get out there and enjoy the rainy Windy City.
For the foodies and cocktailers out there, a little rain won’t stop some of the great Chicago food and drink tours. Good Times Historic Bar Tour happens rain or shine. You will stop at some of Chicago’s finest historical watering holes on this walking tour, just wear appropriate attire so you’re not waterlogged. The Bikes, Bites and Brews tour also happens no matter what curve ball Mother Nature has thrown. Splash through the puddles on your bike as you enjoy some of the best pizza and brews this city has to offer.
If you want to get a taste of the outdoors on a rainy day, but stay dry, Chicago will not let you down. The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum offers wonderful collections and exhibits that will let you experience nature inside, dry. The Judy Istock Butterfly Haven located on the grounds of the museum features over 75 species of exotic butterflies and varying bird types from the Southern Hemisphere. It is located in a 2,700 square foot greenhouse that is lush with tropical trees and flowers that the over 1,000 butterflies flit amongst.
You would think that the Chicago Botanical Garden would be a wash on a rainy day. You would be wrong. You can take a tour on the tram, completely covered, and enjoy the wonderful horticulture displays and their exhibits of artwork and fine photography. The tours run daily from April through October.
We all hope for the best weather when we plan our getaways. However, no matter how much you plan, you never know how the weather is going to end up turning out. Hopefully when you arrive in Chicago the sun is shining, but if not, don’t let it rain on your parade.
